Overlay – ‘3 weeks ago this was once a green field’

Now there is nearly 3,000 sqm of temporary roadways, parking areas, pedestrian flooring and drop off points for accessible shuttles, buses and cars, on this event the spectator may not even know this type of work exists.

Overlay, provides the facilities for a myriad of support services to work. The services that use Overlay all contribute to form a package that enables spectators to arrive, enjoy and leave an event with the minimal amount of fuss.

Traffic Management including PATO marshals who have the power to stop traffic and direct on the public highway need to be accredited to the local county Police Force. VAP’s (Vehicle Access Passes) are issued for transport onto site they are the control identity for measured on venue parking, a form of accreditation but for vehicles. Signage on the public highway and the introduction of staged taxi ranks.

In particular on this event at The White Water Canoe Slalom at Lee Valley Park there are additional considerations for the overlay.

The Police managing local potential issues and surveillance on foot, bicycle, car, helicopter and inflatable motor patrol, also The fire service with an inflatable motor boat for rescue along the canal tow path as the venue is near open water. The Armed forces are sharing our compound as they are supplying security services.

Everyone needs power, surveillance camera cars for monitoring traffic flows during peak travel times, the Police with their mobile station, temporary offices  for organising committee’s, transport offices and welfare for staff to shelter from the weather.

Like a massive Jig Saw all departments contributing to the one aim of spectator experience and welfare. A really interesting line of Event Management involving mainly temporary but sometimes permanent Civil Works too.

The weather has been amazing, rain soaked, bright sunshine and heat which has given the potential for de hydration which prompted some useful information to be displayed on the toilets we have provided for workforce, clients and spectators.
