Overlay – ‘3 weeks ago this was once a green field’
Now there is nearly 3,000 sqm of temporary roadways, parking areas, pedestrian flooring and drop off points for accessible shuttles, buses and cars, on this event the spectator may not even know this type of work exists. Read More
Sections of the event industry we have been working in are Conference Production, Live Events, Exhibition and over the last few years Experiential. On large scale public events there is the event itself, be it Athletics, Football, State Occasions, Formula 1 or Horse racing as examples of the draw for thousands of spectators or delegates.
Behind the scenes there is a machine at work Producing the Overlay at these events, a specialist team of professionals drawn together to deliver a seamless experience for those attending.
Transport ingress and egress, temporary roadway solutions in areas to cope with traffic flows, Structures of welfare for shelter, food and toilets, cueing systems, pedestrian screen areas, security and hostile vehicle management due to terrorist threats. Health and Safety, Sustainability programs to ensure recycling and security for asset protection.
All of these elements are overlaid onto the host event or project. The Olympics project is a unique project for any host Country, it is also a fantastic opportunity to learn new ways of working and is pushing our industry forward through the experience.
What a busy month of pre production, the gps surveys of last month set the base for adding layers of CAD drawing detail of temporary roadways, modified field entrances, swept coach travel paths and compound layouts. We have completed ecology surveys and logged species of plants and shrubs to be recorded for future care, wildlife studies of nests and watching briefs completed and Stat searches are under way to give a full understanding of what lays under the ground out of sight !
I am enjoying the detail and complexity on this outdoor large scale event, apart from the rain and the over use of the brolly last month I am looking forward to some fair weather over the next few weeks during the build of the projects.

Walk in music – now there is a thought.
Recently I was asked for an idea for inspirational audience walkin music for a conference. I was thinking back to what have been past favourite’s, way back when – it was Vivaldi, the good old four seasons, Tina Turner ‘Simply the best’ and for a while M People ‘Move on up’ and a popular choice and favourite of mine ‘Wake up Boo’ by the Boo Radleys.
All well and good, and sound engineers all have their favourite’s of current music, however, when loading a large auditorium of over 1,000 people the popular music track on repeat is not always ideal and a generic instrumental track is easier to use to expand or fade out depending on the extended time taken to encourage the audience to take their seats. I found this one recently, not used it yet but like it, have a listen
