Exhibition Wonder

An interesting month working on exhibitions in the UK and in Germany.

The 02 venue in London is a large venue and Production Managing the build of an exhibition stand in the cavernous space reminded me how chilly it can get when working in the exhibition halls, this meant extra jumpers for the build were packed for Frankfurt for the Press Launch of a new car for Infinity.

Once we were in show mode and all the stands had their lights on and the heating was regulated it was short sleeves as usual.

In The Congress Centre Messe Frankfurt we were using 2 low res side screens for graphics and video and a central hi res LED screen for product graphics and video. Bold graphics work well on the low res screens, if you want to show product  in detail or words on a screen the Hi res screen is a must.

As our press conference was in the morning I managed to have a scoot around the other halls before leaving and was amazed by the technology and quality of the build on some of the stands. Some of the pre-production must have been months and months ahead of the build.

All of the major car manufacturers were using LED products and video mapping to support the launch of new product, Mercedes in particular had a very impactful stand utilizing LED in the floor too, however I did feel it was overdone as my eyes tired from the brightness of the environment.

The BMW hall was particularly impressive with roads having been built which carried delegates around the hall and over the audience to demonstrate their latest electric car offering.

Nissan had an interesting design, 3 loops of truss with internal lighting and stretched fabric exteriors which initially looked like the 3 rings were suspended from the ceiling however the truss was cantilevered from the screen base, an interesting bit of engineering and good use of video mapping using 6 x 20k video projectors to display images over the cars and interacting with the main screen.

A floating mid air sea of globes was Renaults answer to a visual experience to attract onlookers onto their stand. Each globe had it’s own motor and moved independently or in groups with others, the globes changed colour too – very eye catching.

I love working on this type of event, it really is the top of the game business executed in a very slick manor.
